Mindfulness & Meditation as a Solution
It all begins with an idea.

We are all human. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, or if you’re feeling like making your health your mental health priority is a challenge, or you’re feeling anxious, or if you feel like you’re being pulled in many different directions, just know it’s possible to improve both your mental and physical health. And the solution is mindfulness and meditation. You should know just how easy it actually is and there are so many proven scientific benefits to mindfulness meditation.
Science has discovered that not only does meditation and mindfulness increase grey matter of the brain, the actual material that makes us smarter!
It also us to see more clearly, to be able to identify the real priorities and set aside the things in our lives are not priorities but that constantly demand our attention. It allows us be with and process our emotions, and especially for my friends with children, it’s a powerful practice you can try with your whole family. It can really help children manage big emotions.
It allows us to be more present with ourselves, with each other, and allows us to make conscious decisions with what we consume, how we spend our time during each day. Have you ever gone to the movies and before you knew it, you consumed an entire bag of popcorn or box of sweet treats, and barely remember the taste? Mindless eating and living our lives on auto pilot is a dangerous trap that is so easy to fall into.
Mindfulness and meditation allows us to see clearly what we have control over, and what we don’t have control over. For instance, two people could be sitting in the same traffic jam and in separate cars, and one could be frustrated and angry and irritated, while the person in the next car could be calm and collected and peaceful and seeing this as a moment to slow down and just breath.
And it’s as easy as finding a few moments of stillness and turning your focus to your inhales and exhales. Consciously thinking and breathing in, and consciously thinking and breathing out. This helps us to calm what some refer to as the “monkey mind”.

What Exactly is Mindfulness?
It all begins with an idea.
My favorite definition of mindfulness is paying attention with intention in the present moment without judgment, and I like to add, and with a whole lot of compassion and self-compassion.
Our brains are wired by our culture to be constantly productive and because of that our minds are always living in the past or planning for the future. But studies show that a present mind, a calm and still mind, the opposite of what is commonly referred to as the “monkey mind”, is correlated with a greater sense of happiness and purpose.
Have you ever driven ALL the way from home to a destination and don’t even recall the drive? We often do things so mindlessly, out of sheer habit. We often live on autopilot, not making conscious decisions but rather falling into common habits.
So let’s return to paying attention with intention in the present moment, right here, right now, without judgement and whole lot of compassion.
And we call it a “practice” because if the ultimate goal is to calm the racing thoughts of the mind, we can’t assume just slowing down and breathing once will create grand change.
Just like if your fitness goals are to get strong muscle gains, you can’t expect huge results by going to the gym once. It takes repetition, and like muscles, the calmness of the mind grows in time with practice.
So take just a few minutes everyday to practice mindfulness
And just start to shift your attention to your breathing and breathing, knowing you are breathing in and as you breathe out, knowing your breathing out. Breathing in knowing your breathing in. Breathing out knowing you are breathing out. Take three more breaths, here consciously inhaling. Consciously exhaling, slowing down the mind with the inhale and softening into the present moment with the exhale. Inhaling nothing but the inhale on the mind. Exhaling nothing but the exhale, tuning your focus, slowing down the mind.
I hope you enjoy the rest of the day and feel a little bit more grounded and in the moment.
